Special Brownies

Image
We talk about our Moms a lot here on the blogs, but that's because to Chelly and to me, our Mothers were such role models and strong, hard to forget women, just like we aspire to be. Now, to know me as an adult, you would never even imagine me outdoors doing anything remotely close to building a fire, setting up tents or learning to cook in the ground or over a flame. Stepping on a snake, or lying awake all night under the stars while getting eaten alive by Mississippi's state bird (Mosquito) are things that I avoid with every ounce of my soul.  I mean,  my gosh . Girl Scouts are always doing things like cleaning up trash on the highways and getting stung by bees, singing "Kumbaya", hiking in the swelter, mucking around outside in the stinky, muddy, sweaty outdoors.  However, there was a time that I, Auntie Jax braved the elements and did my time learning survival skills, earning patches and of course, selling those famous cookies we all know and love. Things have...

The B**** Is Back

Image
Oh yes, things have been quiet around the Forrest for a good little while. You could hear the crickets, and I haven't said much lately, but I'm back and intend to get back in action and start writing. So look forward to this, maybe I can pull some interesting stories out of my hat. Meanwhile, as with any good program, we'll be back after a word from our sponsor...

Lost Magic Of Summer

Image
Although I tend to hate the heat of a Memphis Summer now, if I take a break from the noisy buzz of the daily adult grind, and take a deep breath, I can remember some of the magic that Summer could conjure up as a child. Here are a few of the things that summer meant to me as a child growing up in the south. Catching Fireflies Going Barefoot (ah my soul)! Riding In Back Of The Old Pickup Truck The Smell of Freshly Cut Grass! Watermelon, and sometimes biting off more than one could chew... Oh Summer heat, still deliciously sweet if you can find just the right way of looking at it. I Miss My Childhood , Aunt Jackie (repeat from "I Miss My Childhood" -linked above)

What Time Is it?!

Image
[Parental Warning - Mature Content I Suppose] Ok, I decided to 'get cracking' on another installment of this because I enjoyed writing about songs in my playlist and why I chose them so much. If you want, you can read the first part below from 3/20. Otherwise, let's get this party started. Today's Random Ten! Ooh look it starts with a really good one: 1. Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix My love affair with Jimi Hendrix and his music began long ago. There has always been something haunting to me in his words, his enchanting chords and just to look at his facial expression in the photos that have been around since he's been gone. "Little Wing" began as my special song, once again because of "Z". We would be riding a back road late at night, holding hands and Z would look at me and just say, "Butterflies and Zebras and Moonbeams" and smile that smile. One night as we left work for one of our late-night back road ventures, he handed me a version ...

A Poem I Wrote

Image
"The Grass Is Not So Sure" The grass is not so sure. It offers forth a green, maybe two as an offering for the goddess of spring. Mother Nature blushes with her curious glory. Some trees are bold enough to open an eye, certain lovely flowers too- peeking out above the dead and gone... watching, waiting patiently for their stage cue. The sky is brighter day by day... creatures big and small come out to play. Their intuition is strong and pure, but the grass is not so sure. *In honor of Spring, (c) 2010 Jacqueline Wood

I'll Have Seconds Please!

Image
Tomorrow is my 2nd "Blogiversary". That's right, Deep In The Forrest turns 2 years old. Hard to believe... they grow up so fast. Anyways, due to the funeral today and I'll be 'AFK' for a while, I thought "No Time Like The Present" to start the celebrations early. I can never forget my very first Blog visitor, or official anyroad, he is a fantastic Bloke, one of the funniest I know, and does the greatest "foot in" shots I've ever seen... Thanks and congratulations to BARNZE!! . You've been there from the beginning of the Forrest, and I appreciate you. I know you read and come by when you can... You ROCK!! Come on everybody give us all some applause!!! IT'S PRESENT TIME!!! So following in our genius, good ol' pal, Corky's footsteps, I'd like to propose a COMMENT CHALLENGE . Let's just see how many comments my Blogiversary post can get! Come on guys, I don't ask for much usually, and I haven't bitched about...

For Those About To Rock

Image
(We salute you!) Apparently, by authority of Her Indoors , I Rock! This is a great honor, and I express my sincere gratitude to you, as well as all of you who made this moment possible! It truly is rare that I win awards, or win much of anything for that matter, but occasionally, the stars align and I do. So, along with the honor of the "Rocking Blogger" award, I also get to award this to 5 more bloggers of my choosing... (which would include Her Indoors, if she hadn't already received this award). However, I couldn't narrow it down to 5 I had to cheat and do 6, and it's my award to give away, so I can do that! :) Congratulations (in no particular order) goes to: Jinks at Jinks Writes and Rewrites . Why? Because she has such an original outlook on life as well as sense of humor. Her blog reflects that. She is always very supportive of me and uplifting, and an all around great friend. So, Jinks, You Rock! Next, our Friendly Neighborhood Rockdog . Why? Of course f...

Too Many Spankings to Speak Of

Image
Approximately 9:01 a.m. on a beautiful Monday morning (not all THAT long ago), the world became blessed with the light of one very special child. The Mother was ecstatic as this was the baby she had been praying for! She named her Jacqueline Dawn (although she nearly named her something else entirely, but wished to name her after her Dad). So it was on this day that she was born... The world did not know what a serious "Butt Whooping" it was about to get, and as well, the Guardian Angels did not know how hard their job was about to be! They have all done very well, however as she is still alive and kicking... Her Mom called this morning (very early) to tell her "Happy Birthday Dawn of the Morning!" Happy Birthday to Me! Let's have a look back in history for the ever-changing, all-powerful Aunt Jackie: Here I am crushing my inchworm, circa (approx) 2.5 years old. 12th Birthday at McDonald's (I'm the one on the right of course, with the orange balloon) ...

Kudzu's Surely Grows On You

Image
We had a blast last night, and would like to truly thank Kudzu's Bar and Deli, Memphis, TN , for being such a gracious establishment and making us feel like part of the family. For other bands out there, just as everyone else has told us--When you play at Kudzu's, it's a comfortable, friendly environment and it's like playing in your living room. Everyone there is super-nice, and as the review states in the link above, the food is always fantastic and they have a great selection of beers too. Whether you're popping in for an after-work beer, relaxing on the weekend, or coming out to see my band, "SAP" play, you can't lose with Kudzu's... it just grows on you! :) [read the Amazing Story of Kudzu (the vine) and learn how it got so widespread.] Anyway, thanks again Kudzu's! You guys are top-notch, and we really love coming there and playing as well as just hanging out. I love those guys from the "Thursday Night Pickin Party" too, w...

It's Friday and the Rent is Due!

Happy Friday everyone... I'm elusive the last couple days, got lots going on and not really feeling 'bloggy' so I wanted to share this hilarious video that a coworker shared with me... Starring Will Ferrell and possibly the meanest landlord I've ever seen... go ahead laugh, you know you want to! Will Ferrell vs. The Landlord I tried to embed it, but it wouldn't act right, so do yourself a big Friday favor and click the link... watch the video.

This Is For The Dork In You

Image
Well, I've just pretty much decided what I'm going to present for my Dork story in honor of Friday the Dorkteenth . Yes, that's right-it's a great day for horror stories, or huge stories of embarrassment so I've decided to take time out from my "extreme coolness" to join all of you dorks for a day of fun and celebration. :) If you're wondering what on Earth my story might be about, I'll give you a hint: Childhood Crushes, Mud Pies and Crayola Eyeshadow. Me a lowly fifth grader, and he a sexy senior in high school (I liked em' older back then). So tune in for it... tomorrow. If you haven't checked into this event already, then do so and think about posting your very own tale of Dorkishness. I'm doing it, Rockdog's doing it, and some others I'm sure... so Join Us!!! Therefore, today I'm preparing my thoughts to share with you all tomorrow, a dorky side of me hopefully like none you've ever seen... While you're waitin...

On Easter Mourning

Image
*This was written this morning on my Mother's screened in front porch, where I went to meditate, hoping for a few moments of solitude, and so I began to write freely and without scrutiny as I would prefer it be read... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's Sunday morning, Easter. The sky is blue, and the birds are singing their Mourning [sic] tune. This slight chill in the air is all that is helping me make it through. I'm sitting out on the front porch, looking out on the yard where I grew up--this place that I've called 'Home' since before I even had memories. So, why do I feel like a stranger here? It's like all of a sudden, I'm a passerby in a foreign land. Maybe I have slipped through a wormhole and fallen into an alternate plane. Maybe the 'other Me' is happy, smiling and worry-free with no stench of death surrounding... not posing in anticipation of the darkness to come, reflecting on the darkness ...

Have A Dog Gone Happy Easter!!!

Image
Gotta be truthful here, I've been racking my brain and nothing THAT interesting ever happened on Easter for me to really write up a story about it. Plus, I'm still going through a bit of a block. Gotta go dye some eggs and have some family fun, so I'll leave you guys with this, and my very best wishes for an ecstatically Happy Easter!!! **Aunt Jackie will return after these messages** Please enjoy a very funny portion from "Old School" the movie.

Chapter 5 - We're On The Highway To Hell

My thoughts ran wild the week following the big Inkwell gig. I was a cat, prowling and working on the strategy for my next move. Indeed however, work beckoned and I was staring at a long week ahead of me. Of course, I enlisted the equally expert plotting skills of my "best mate" Tamra... after all, an evil duo can't go around just 50% evil. So, on I worked, impatiently awaiting the weekend, when I would undoubtedly have my chance to proceed with "Operation Free Willy". I'm just kidding, I didn't call it that. Hey! I'm a nice girl, remember? {*snickers*} "EOU" was having a show in Nashville as it turned out, so that sounded like our golden ticket. We immediately got on the horn and put our heads together to get a little group on board to go. LDP's other guitarist, and long-time friend of Rich's, Gray (the owner of the Yukon) would be key if we wanted a vehicle to accommodate a group. So we spoke with Gray, who already knew EOU was pl...

Mom's the Word

Image
Today was the first day of my Christmas vacation. I am off through the 26th, which is great... a nice 6 day weekend. Of course, time will fly, but I will try to make the best of it... Maybe it won't stack with the rest of the holiday blurs. Anyway, since I had the time, I went down to see my Mom and Dad today and with intention of helping Mom out with a few things... We went to the store, and picked up things she needed for our upcoming Christmas Dinner, I tried to get a few things myself, but I am not good at shopping. The crowds and the lines and just the stores themselves give me The Willies . I enjoyed spending some time with her, after the store we stopped off and had some fish, which is one of her favorite things to eat. Had to admit I was a bit peckish myself, so fish sounded good. (Catfish to be exact). Took Dad home a plate (shrimp is his seafood of choice). And I gave them a preview of the family-photo slideshow/DVD movie that I prepared for Christmas... I wanted to see w...
