Summertime Blues

Image
The winds blow hot and ill in Memphis, the temps are literally at 99 - 101 degrees Fahrenheit (Heat Indices of 112-113+ notwithstanding). So we live our daily lives, trying not to pulverize one another, especially during times of road rage in our boiling, humid wonderland. Right now, it's early, and so quiet the only noise for me is the ticking sound of my own typing. This is the time of day that I have to cherish as quiet time for me is a super-rare commodity... Just don't get enough!! I sometimes wonder how we get ourselves into the situations we do, how our lives really come to this, and why some of us fell prey to the proverbial 'wrong turn at Albuquerque', as I always like to say. Seriously, is ANYONE out there as happy as they seem? I look around me and other people seem to have everything they want, or things just fall in their laps, their greatest desires come true. I, on the other hand feel like I am constantly on my knees with folded hands, begging. Sweeeeeeee...

Lost Magic Of Summer

Image
Although I tend to hate the heat of a Memphis Summer now, if I take a break from the noisy buzz of the daily adult grind, and take a deep breath, I can remember some of the magic that Summer could conjure up as a child. Here are a few of the things that summer meant to me as a child growing up in the south. Catching Fireflies Going Barefoot (ah my soul)! Riding In Back Of The Old Pickup Truck The Smell of Freshly Cut Grass! Watermelon, and sometimes biting off more than one could chew... Oh Summer heat, still deliciously sweet if you can find just the right way of looking at it. I Miss My Childhood , Aunt Jackie (repeat from "I Miss My Childhood" -linked above)

Heat Of The Moment

Jinks had a couple of cool posts that I recently read, one of which highlighted nuts and profuse masturbation, and the other spoke sorely about the heat, and her way of dealing. I know everyone is feeling it, even in those places that we in the south have heard tall tales of that enjoy mild summers and harsh winters, I'm sure the heat is on at least 7 or 8. So we find ourselves smack-dab in the "Dog Days of Summer", right? Being from the south, I always wonder where funny little nicknames and phrases come from... so I always have to look it up. According to Wikipedia's definition of "Dog Days" : The phrase Dog Days or " the dog days of summer ", refers to the hottest, most sultry days of summer. They are a phenomenon of the northern hemisphere that usually falls between early July and early September but the actual dates vary greatly from region to region, depending on latitude and climate . Dog Days can also define a time period or event that...

Cold Day In July

Image
Here around Memphis, you're not likely to find the words 'Cold' and 'July' spoken in the same sentence. I was up way too late last night (but strangely, up earlier than I was even yesterday); when I was just about to go to bed, I looked at the computer clock and actually got a shock when I saw "July 1". I mean, how did it slip up on us this fast?? Entirely HALF of the year, evaporated before our eyes. I haven't had a chance to write as much as I wanted to over the weekend, but things just happen I guess, and time flies. I often wonder how "accomplished" everyone else feels. Do you feel like you are able to get things done in your spare time, you know? Make them most of time off, or your weekends?? Usually, I start the week on Monday feeling like I haven't done anything worth anything... Someone give me lessons!! Recently, on MySpace , I've talked a bit about music with a very talented former classmate of mine, who's music I found ...

Face First!

Image
When you see the ripe red watermelons, you truly know that summer has arrived. We should remember to immerse ourselves in joy and the sweetness of life like kids do. As you can see in this photo of my niece Reanna and nephew, Jackson-they have no problem diving in Face First. Never grow up guys, EVER! Hold on to that magic... Here's to Summer.

Weekend Wood

Waking up on Saturday is always the climax of the week, no matter what you've had going on it feels great when you sleep late, and then know you don't have to go anywhere or do anything if you don't want to... That's exactly what I did yesterday. Once I woke up, I did a few things, watched a little T.V., and fell back asleep for about a 2 hour afternoon doze-fest! When I woke up, it was time to get ready for band practice... We hadn't practiced Thursday night, which is our normal night, but we wanted to work on a few specific songs for our set, so as a band we went out to eat at The Bar-B-Q Shop in Midtown, Memphis. It's top-notch if you're going to be in Memphis and want to try our fine BBQ (and yes, they have beer)! Don't be fooled by the more commercialized "popular" ones... take it from me. So we ate a nice dinner, then we practiced. Mr. J and I then went home and had a nice quiet late evening. I arrived home too late to listen to Rockdo...
